As American churches became clubs, the members focused on shared activities like worship, which drew from a previous emphasis on values and morals that derived from Scripture.
Who was going to harrang a generous vestry member for plundering failing businesses in takeovers that cut jobs and ran companies into the ground?
So we went through the motions, but became even farther removed from following Jesus as the measure of how we live our lives.
Now, churches are faced with shrinking revenue and skyrocketing expenses. Even keeping buildings open is becoming impossible under the old once-a-week model.
Congregations are struggling to survive. What keeps them going, and what outcome do they think is possible?
